Barbara Leong

Barbara was born in 1974 in Wellington where she has lived her whole life.

After working in the corporate office world for over 10 years she decided to complete Whitireia Polytechnic’s Diploma of Jewellery Design in 2005.

Barbara’s graphic design and communications background – particularly her eye for detail – shows in her simplistic jewellery designs.

She likes to work with found or inexpensive materials, with sterling to support.

Barbara tries to incorporate layers, something on the reverse/other side (ie. not viewable when worn), or a see-through-ness to her work, or actual reversible pieces. She does this to express her concern of often being viewed ‘face on’ or ‘one-sided’ only; being of Chinese origin, but a 4th generation New Zealander.

Barbara works from her home studio in Karori.
