Kathryn Yeats says this about her new show 'Of Dust and Bone'
‘The notion that relics of the body continue to carry some presence of their former occupant can be found throughout history. It appears in jewelled objects and jewellery such as religious reliquaries containing remains of saints or in mourning jewellery and art objects of the Victorian era worked in the hair of deceased loved ones.’
‘A contemporary view of the flesh as the holder of the essential nature a person can be found in concept of cellular memory. Cellular memory is the pseudoscientific belief that memory is carried in cells of the body other than the brain. This theory is based on anecdotal evidence that heart transplant patients can suddenly take on the tastes traits and skills of their donors, suddenly begin using words from their donor’s vocabularies, or even recalling their donor’s memories. ‘
‘These works explore the association between memory and the body. Each piece places the wearer in contact with the residue of another creature in material or pictorial form and allows a glimpse into fragments of another's memory. ‘
