Sunniva Zoete - West

Sunniva Zoete-West (1964 - ) is a versatile artist, with a background in textiles and music. With a successful music teaching career spanning over twenty-five years, she is dedicating her life to promoting contemporary music, jewelry and art.

Sunniva accomplishes all her crochet and woven work employing fine silver and gold, sometimes using materials in relatively heavy gauges to achieve a robust structure that is powerful in form yet rich in colour. Her informal training was acquired growing up in the strongly art & craft focused culture of the Netherlands in the 1970’s where she learned the arts of crochet, knitting, macramé, weaving and needle-point. She combines traditional European techniques with explorations of Viking, Maori and American Indian tread-techniques. She prefers to work with no visible clasps though some structures are attached to hinges or clasps. Most works are firstly conceived as a shape, using a single line of wire with the degree of delicateness of the finished work decided upon depending on the function of the piece.

Sunniva loves the meditative act of crochet, a sculpture in process with design often developing along the way cumulating in an intrinsic textured surface. She loves the directness and simplicity of working with precious wire which requires total concentration as imperfections cannot be corrected or undone. The precious metal shows its fiery glory with every movement of the body.

Sunniva has her own studio at her home in Ngaio (Wellington, New Zealand). She designs her wearable art for private clients but is also represented by galleries in New Zealand. Her work has been described as contemporary with a wink to old Flemish lace and Scandinavian modern design resulting in stunning, wearable compositions.
